What is ICSI and PICSI?

ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is a fertilization technique used within an IVF cycle: a selected sperm is introduced directly into the oocyte. In selected situations PICSI (Physiological Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) may be added as a complementary sperm-selection technique before performing ICSI.

ICSI and PICSI

Who is it indicated for?

The fertilization technique is selected according to the clinical characteristics of each case and the assessment of the treating physician together with the embryology team; it is usually considered for male factor or previous cycles with low fertilization.

The final indication always depends on your diagnosis. Your treating physician will review your test results before proposing this treatment.

The process, step by step

  1. 1Follicular aspiration and semen sample preparation
  2. 2Sperm selection (PICSI when indicated)
  3. 3Microinjection of the sperm into the oocyte
  4. 4Embryo culture and developmental assessment

It is performed on the same day as follicular aspiration, within the IVF cycle timeline.
