Endometrial Preparation and Embryo Transfer (PETE)

PETE is one of the final stages of assisted reproduction treatment: it prepares the endometrium to receive one or, in selected cases, two embryos within the uterine cavity. Embryos may come from a recent IVF cycle (fresh transfer) or have been previously vitrified and warmed for use. Before transfer, embryo development, endometrial thickness and characteristics, and reproductive history are assessed in order to synchronize embryo development with endometrial receptivity.

For patients with embryos available after IVF treatment, using their own or donor gametes; for those who underwent Preimplantation Genetic Testing and wish to transfer a tested embryo; and for those who vitrified embryos in previous treatments. The number of embryos transferred is individualized, balancing the chance of pregnancy with maternal-fetal safety.

With vitrified embryos, endometrial preparation and monitoring usually take approximately 2 to 3 weeks, depending on your cycle length, the protocol used, and your endometrial response. The transfer procedure itself takes a few minutes; the pregnancy test is performed approximately one to two weeks later, per your physician's protocol.
